The overall aim of this £5 million investment programme is to fi nd and nurture genuine breakthroughs that will transform the way community sport looks and feels in the future. The fund will invest in new ideas and solutions which will reach a whole new audience, and provide better, more exciting opportunities to a wider range of people, some of whom, perhaps, think that sport is not for them.

Investment will be in small-scale but ground breaking innovations which have the ability to become the scaled-up, widespread activities that deliver high quality community sport in future years.

The Innovation Fund is open to initial applications from 12 May 2009 to 10 August 2009.

Angela Evans Smith is new third sector minister
By Paul Jump, Third Sector Online, 8 June 2009

Former parliamentary private secretary to Gordon Brown replaces Kevin Brennan

The former parliamentary private secretary to Gordon Brown, Angela Evans Smith, has become the new minister for the third sector.

She replaces Kevin Brennan, who has moved on to Peter Mandelson's new Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Smith will become a minister of state rather than a parliamentary under secretary, as Brennan was. She has also been appointed to the Privy Council, though she will not be a full cabinet minister.

Smith, the MP for Basildon, was first elected to Parliament at the 1997 general election. She became a Government whip in 2001 before becoming Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in 2002. She subsequently moved to the Communities and Local Government department before becoming Gordon Brown's parliamentary private secretary when he became Prime Minister in June 2007.

By Third Sector reporters, Third Sector Online, 9 June 2009

Reaction to appointment of new minister for the third sector

New third sector minister Angela Smith has been urged to make tax-effective giving and the reform of Gift Aid her top priorities.

Smith succeeded Kevin Brennan yesterday in Prime Minister Gordon Brown's latest reshuffle.

"We hope Ms Smith will put tax-effective giving and Gift Aid reform at the top of her agenda," said John Low, chief executive of the Charities Aid Foundation. "This is particularly important now as charities see demand for their services increase in the face of recession."
