Big Lottery funds new services at Voluntary Action We are delighted to announce that Voluntary Action Waltham Forest will be able to provide more services to local community and voluntary groups over the next four years through a Big Lottery BASIS2 funded project called ‘Better Connected and Moving Up’. This means that, in addition to our existing services, we will now be working to widen the opportunities for local groups to access premises, and benefit from shared services. We will also support groups that are seeking to achieve a quality accreditation mark which, in turn, will support their funding applications and help them to prepare for commissioning and contracts. And, in addition to funding our existing information services, we will now be redeveloping our website to allow member groups to use it as a powerful online tool. All exciting stuff! More details to follow on the website, and in Voluntary Views. New staff at VAWF As a result of the Big Lottery funding we are happy to introduce two new members of staff and a change of role for one of our existing staff members: Anthony Fincham is our new full-time business development officer. His role will include helping member organisations develop opportunities to achieve quality accreditation, which can include supporting groups in completing business plans. Anthony will also work to improve access to facilities e.g. premises, and shared services to achieve reduced costs for these. For further information contact anthony.fincham@voluntaryaction-wf.org.uk Sarah Kinson is our new part-time information officer. Her responsibilities will include this e-bulletin, the newsletter ''Voluntary Views'', and writing for our website. So if you have any news that you would like to share or any feedback about these publications, please contact her on 0208 521 0377 or sarah.kinson@voluntaryaction-wf.org.uk And our own Cris Thompson, who used to be the Information Officer, is changing jobs to Communications Officer. This year’s E17 Art Trail finished on Sunday 13th September, and everyone involved has reported a great success. The trail has been going for 5 year now, each year gaining in strength and size. This year there were over 150 exhibitions and events in 90 venues all over E17. Artists opened their houses, gardens, sheds and studios to visitors from accross London, and they came: Even during the second weekend, in spite of the Victoria line being closed, audience numbers were high; 150 people attended the “walk around radical Walthamstow with Roger Huddle”, and during the whole trail, over 1600 people visited one venue in Walthamstow Village! If you have experiences of this year’s trail, the project would like to hear from you to assist in their funding monitoring - there is a simple online form to provide feedback, see www.e17arttrail.co.uk for more details. Louder.org.uk the new home for e-campaigning is now live! This site provides a range of online activist tools for people who want to change the world, enabling you to create and run your own campaigns and connect with others. It is a project of Campaigning Effectiveness at the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO,) in partnership with Sitewriters. It is free. You can sign-up at: www.louder.org.uk/signup.php As part of the launch they are offering free introductory workshops on ‘e-campaigning’ at local events. If you have an event this autumn/winter that you’d like them to be a part of contact them with an outline of the type of event, the date, size and type of audience you expect to attend, as well as any other relevant details and they will get in touch to let you know if they can attend. A shorter version of the Compact, which outlines how the public and voluntary sectors should behave towards each other, was due to be published at the beginning of next month after a consultation on the revised version closed last week. But the Office of the Third Sector pushed back the date until the end of the year amid widespread concern from smaller community groups that the new version ignored their needs and catered mainly for large charities that deliver contracts. The Community Sector Coalition, a group of 20 national charities and umbrella bodies, said in its response to the consultation that the revised Compact was "not fit for purpose" and should be rewritten immediately. Waltham Forest Council training on Workshop Facilitation The London Borough of Waltham Forest, in partnership with the metropolitan police service, won beacon status in 'Cohesive and Resilient Communities' earlier this year. As part of this, they are committed to a year of sharing learning and good practice nationally. They have organised a two-day training course on Workshop Facilitation, which will teach the basics on how to be a good facilitator and the qualities and skills required. They hope this will create a group of people with the skills to facilitate workshops that they will be holding later in the year.
