’Brick by Brick’

English Partnerships produced a useful pack in 1998 entitled ‘Brick by Brick – how to develop a community building’. It includes basic guidance on planning your building project, designing your building, contractors and tendering, completion, etc. It also includes a typical structure for a business plan for developing a community building. This is available by ringing 01925 644782.
A copy of ‘Brick by Brick’ is also available in Voluntary Action’s library.

Community Matters

Community Matters publishes ‘Managing Your Community Building,’ the most comprehensive and practical handbook available covering the law and good practice in the management of community buildings. It has been fully updated to take account of the many legislative, regulatory and other changes that have taken place since it first appeared.

They also publish ‘Occupying Community Premises –guidelines for community associations and local authorities.’ This book has been written as a practical response to the growing trend towards formalising the arrangements whereby voluntary and community groups occupy a local authority’s buildings. The book includes a specimen lease, a model declaration of trust for holding trustees and a sample management agreement.
